IMPLEMENTATIONWe began by surveying students to determine their prior knowledge and interests/attitude towards science. We asked them to create a picture of what a science class looked like.
Student Inquiry
Students participated in an inquiry unit to explore the question: Can an emperor penguin survive the weather conditions in Dildo? To answer this questions students determined that they would need to understand the characteristics of a penguin and their habitat and compare that to the habitat of Dildo. The weather conditions were an important factor for the penguins survival. Students completed a RAN Chart (Reading and Analyzing Non-fiction) to confirm their knowledge, eliminate misconceptions and record new findings about penguins. They were recording the weather conditions in Dildo, and graphing the results on a daily basis. They compared this to the weather conditions of Antarctica that they read about in their children’s literature. They used a live video feed of a penguin in captivity and analysed their data from this observation to further their understanding of the needs of a penguin.
